Tips: Brushed DC motor basics
The operation of all motors (with the exception of special ones, such as piezoelectric motors) depends on the interaction between the stator and the rotor's electromagnetic fields, which are controlled to periodically generate the attraction and repulsion forces between the stator and the rotor to cause motion.
So how does a brushed DC gear motor generate the rotating magnetic field needed to rotate its armature without the need for an external controller? The motor does the work itself. A pair of 180° separate brushes on the motor housing direct the applied current to the armature coil through two commutator contacts (metalplates). Each metal plate covers an armature of approximately 180°. As the motor rotates, the current circuit will automatically switches every half turn.
The armature's magnetic field interacts with the rotor's magnetic field. The direction of the magnetic field generated by the coil is always switching and is attracted or repulsed by the field generated by the external coil or permanent magnet. As the rotor rotates, the direction of its magnetic field also reverses, thus keeping the motor rotating.
