Tips: Classification of stepper motor according to the drive mode of stepper motor
According to the drive mode, stepper motor is divided into constant voltage and current drive. The constant current drive is also divided into unipolar and bipolar drive.
Drive circuit of the constant voltage drive is simple, but the function of electronic commutation is realized. The cost is low. It is generally applicable for rotation at velocity lower than 150rpm and the occasions of large using quantity and low cost. The most common drive voltage of constant voltage is 12V DC. There is also 24V DC or other voltage. The drive voltage of the constant voltage is generally equal to or slightly larger than the phase voltage of the stepper motor. The drive voltage should not be increased randomly. Otherwise, the stepper motor will be halted if working current is too large. The resistance and inductance of stepper motor with the constant voltage drive is generally large. Along with the rise in rotational velocity of the motor, EMF will be increased rapidly, and then the input voltage is offset. Therefore, the working torque will be reduced rapidly along with the rising rotational velocity, so it is only applicable to the low-velocity application occasion.
Constant current drive is chopping wave drive. The drive voltage can be higher a lot than the phase voltage of motor. The working torque will be less attenuated when the motor rotates at high velocity. The stepper motor with general constant current drive is advised to be applicable for the range of 90-900rpm. As for the bipolar drive of stepper motor with the same size and inductance value, due to small resistance value and the working current can be large, the holding torque is large and it is the mainstream drive mode. As for the unipolar drive, it is only more advantageous over torque than bipolar drive if higher than 1800rpm only under the circumstance of very high velocity.
