Tips: Difference between synchronous motor and asynchronous motor
- Difference in design
The biggest difference between synchronous motor and asynchronous motor is that if their rotor speed and stator rotating magnetic field are consistent. The rotor speed and the stator rotating magnetic field is the same, called synchronous motor, otherwise, it is called asynchronous motor. In addition, the stator windings of the synchronous motor and asynchronous motor are the same, but the difference lies the rotor structure of the motor. The rotor of the synchronous motor is short circuited winding that relies on electromagnetic induction to produce electric current, so it is also called induction motor. And the rotor structure of the synchronous motor is relatively complicated, it needs external excitation power supply and pull-in current through slip ring. - Difference in reactive power
Asynchronous motor can only absorb reactive power, synchronous motor not only can emit reactive power, but also can absorb reactive power. - Difference in functions
Synchronous motor is mostly used in large generators, while asynchronous motor is almost used in motor occasions.
